Bukit Kiara
PERSONAL PROJECT
Bukit Kiara is a 466-hectare forest reserve nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is a sanctuary teeming with biodiversity and stands as one of the last remaining green lungs in the city, providing a crucial habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna.
However, Bukit Kiara is under threat due to the rapid development and expansion of the neighbouring districts.
The threat of deforestation to Bukit Kiara, compounded by the disruptive impact of human activities, poses a grave danger to the living system of the forest reserve, potentially leading to the fragmentation of its habitat, which could in turn disrupt wildlife behaviour, breeding patterns and the overarching ecological balance.
In the face of unchecked urbanisation in many sprawling Asian cities such as Kuala Lumpur, natural habitats are forced to adapt while existing in near isolation, encircled, threatened and too often overpowered by cement and steel structures.
As Kuala Lumpur continues to expand, the relentless demand for housing and land exerts immense pressure on the city’s green lungs and their diverse biotic communities, simultaneously disrupting the connectivity of green corridors – natural habitats such as Bukit Kiara present within and around the city – with a potential devastating effect on their long term viability and biodiversity and the city’s own ecosystem.
